After Graduation – Emil

First summer after graduation, I worked as an encyclopedia salesman while waiting for a call from a state college in Mindanao. The summer ended but the call did not come. When the sales slowed, months after the school opened, I decided to apply for a teaching job for the second semester of 1979-1980 school year. I was hired by a private school in Malabon, Metro Manila.

For the school year 1980-1981, I got in to the Division of Public School (Manila) and was assigned in Tondo High School. I taught there till the school year 1982-1983 for a total of three school years. While teaching there, I took some courses in computer operations and programming.

When my former principal in Malabon learned that I resigned from the public school, she requested me to join her to teach high school math in Meycauayan Junior College where she is a director. I taught there for the school year 1983-1984.

In mid 1984, I partnered with a friend to a business venture of used corrugated carton recycling. The business did not really pick up. And in November of 1984, through a friend of a friend, I got in as RPG programmer in La Tondena, Inc. office in Quiapo using IBM System/34.

November of 1985, I resigned from La Tondena and got hired in Warner Lambert, (Phils.), Inc. Our office was in Greenhills, San Juan with manufacturing plant in Ugong, Pasig. For some weeks we had System/34, which was replaced by System/36. In 1991, System/36 was replaced with AS/400. I stayed in Warner Lambert for ten years until I migrated to USA in December of 1995. I used my 10 years separation benefit as fund to survive while looking for job in US.

February 1996, I got in as operator/encoder for System/34 for a small plumbing distributor in Queens, NY. In May 1996, I suffered from severe carpal tunnel syndrome because I always pushed myself to finish batches of invoices. I resigned to recuperate. It took months of rest and physical therapy before the symptoms went away.

December 1996, I was hired as PC technician in Rosenthal & Rosenthal, Inc. where I still presently work. Operator responsibility was added because we had S/36 machine. My ‘title’ transformed into technician/programmer/operator because by accident and urgency my programming skills was discovered . I repaired PC, write program in VB and operate System/36 which was replaced with small AS/400 after some years. Then Network Administrator was added when the company decided to consolidate departmental Novell network into on company wide system. After a year, we replaced it with Windows NT network.

The network grew big and the company hired more PC techs and task of repair was removed from me. The network grew more, the company hired a network admin. In 2006. the application from AS/400 was fully migrated to a Windows network based application.

These days, I am a ‘sophisticated’ operation supervisor.
