After Graduation – Olga
by Olga · August 18, 2009
Teaching
After graduation from PNC, I taught year 10 students at UP High School together with Luchie Canlas, Annie Gomez and Arnel Raymundo who were all from BSMT Batch A. I was very idealistic then, thinking that all my students will like maths considering the effort that I was putting into my lesson plan and to my lectures. But I got discouraged whenever I see students talking at the back and seemed not interested in the subject.
I taught for 1 ½ years and then went into the IT field. Maybe, teaching was not for me. When I applied for an NBI clearance to migrate to Australia, I was asked to pay the equivalent of 2 ½ years of the scholarship. My name was in the NSDB List that was submitted to NBI.
Computer Career
I trained at Summa Computers and worked as a programmer for 2 years. Then I worked at the Infrastructure Computer Centre, the IT arm of the Dept of Public Works and Highways in Port Area for 6 years and other 2 years at Napocor.
Family
In March 1983, Danny and I got married in QC and were blessed with 2 daughters. We migrated to Australia in 1988 to join my sister’s family and my parents who have been in Sydney since 1985. Trina is now 25 and Lorena is 21, both are in IT as well. Trina studied Computer Science and Maths and is now working in a stockbroker while Lorena is part-time student and part-time working as an IT Support.
Danny taught in Torres HS, Manila Science HS, La Salle and at Xavier School. After migrating to Australia, he decided to change his career. He is now working at the Australian taxation office since 1989 and I am working with Logica, an IT outsourcing company.
In our 20 years here, we made sure that we had a balance of work and family life, family being the priority. That’s why we tried to look for work near our home and not in the city which is 1 hour away from home. We also look after my mom and Danny’s mom. They have their separate flats but they sleep at our house and we look after them and their needs. My mom is 89 and Danny’s mom is 79. Malalakas pa sila, sa awa ng Diyos. Alaga ang mga seniors dito ng gobyerno.
We also participate in the church activities especially the Filipino Catholic Association at Holy Spirit Parish in St Clair. Meron kaming Filo mass every first Sunday of the month. The girls are also involved in the youth group in the parish. Trina as one of the youth leaders while Lorena is involved in the choir.
In March 2008, Danny and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary officiated by my cousin Fr King.
It’s hard to compress the 30 years of our life into one blog but for sure, I am still the same person that you know from college days. I hope to share with you all my experiences and reminisce with our happy moments together in college.

We recently celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary in March 2023 at the St Joseph Shrine in Quezon City, where we got married in 1983. Some of our classmates were able to join us celebrate this memorable occasion – Leonor and Jojo, Amy and Melvin, Helen and SR Magda.

Congratulations! Such achievements, such blessings. Philippine education may have lost both of you but your success in family and career is your testimony and it’s still continuing…

Olga,
Inggit naman ako sa’yo! I’ve planned to have our renewal of vows for our 25th anniversary and our 30th, but it seems that Alex is so difficult to “catch” these days. He would always tell me that we could have one in Las Vegas anytime I want to. But I want it to be in Cebu with both our parents and children, so maybe I’ll wait four more years for our 35th anniversary. Problem is, I have to maintain my size because I already had a dress made for such an ocassion 6 years ago .(hirap ano?)
Congrats to you! Bait naman ni Danny.
Regards,
JO

Olga,
When we were starting our egroup, Leonor had an initial lead-in about your whereabouts. So I tried to search for you via Google. Was not entirely sure you were the one in the picture in your concgregation’s website – yet your eyes were distinct as I remembered them in college. Confirmed it was you when you joined our egroup.
With the class reconnecting and renewed interaction, indeed you are very much the same Olga we knew – friendly, sincere and with clarity of perception – just as your eyes still are!

thanks, noe for the kind words. it’s really good to re-connect with friends after so many years. eventhough we went our own different ways after college, we will always have a soft spot for the 4 years we spent together in college. ngayon nga ay lalo pa tayong nagkakakilala ng husto via the emails and this website. at lumalaki ang support network natin. regards to you and to your family…

hi alex and jo, sige, it will be a wonderful family reunion in the vatican city. imbitado ba kami? 🙂
sa capella clementina kami nag-renew, overlooking St Pete’rs tomb. it wasn’t planned that way. nag-request lang kami sa pinsan naming pari sa rome na bigyan kami ng blessing kahit na sa isang sulok ng basilica. pero nag-reserve pala siya ng chapel at inabisuhan kami na magma-mass siya. and it was a very memorable wedding renewal. kasama namin sina trina , lorena and a niece and her hubby (both from london). hanggang ngayon nga ay hindi pa rin kami makapaniwala. regards to the family…olga
